Films to See Before You Die: #55 Star Trek

Star Trek (2009)

Director: J.J. Abrams

Cast: Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Eric Bana, Bruce Greenwood

Synopsis: On the day of his birth James T. Kirk’s (Chris Pine), father dies on his ship in a last stand against Nero (Eric Bana) a mysterious alien time-traveling looking for Ambassador Spock. Spock (Zachary Quinto), in this time, is also a child on Vulcan disdained by his own kind for his half-human heritage. Now grown up Kirk has been challenged to reach his full potential by Captain Pike (Bruce Greenwood), by enlisting in Star Fleet like his father. Spock has been offered as spot in the Vulcan High Council but declines in order to explore his human heritage by enlisting in Star Fleet. Now 3 years later Kirk is taking the Kobayashi Maru test for a third time and he becomes the first cadet to beat the no-win scenario but Spock who designed the program is not convinced. After being suspended from active duty they find out that their has been a distress call from Vulcan and Star Fleet rushes to aid them. Kirk is able to con his way on board the U.S.S. Enterprise with the help of Dr. McCoy. Kirk warns Pike that he is rushing into a trap because the descriptions of the ship attacking Vulcan matched those of the Romulan ship that attack his father 25 years ago. After arriving at Vulcan to learn that it is being destroyed from the inside out and all other federation ships have been destroyed. Both Kirk and Spock must settle their differences and stop Nero before he destroys Earth as well.

Trivia: The audio FX were designed by sound effects technician Ben Burtt, who is noted for his work on Star Wars: Episode IV – A New Hope. To recreate the sounds of photon torpedoes and warp drive, Ben Burtt capped a long spring against a contact microphone, and mixed in the sound of cannon fire. To give a musical hum to the sounds of warping/transporting, Burtt used a 1960s oscillator.

Why I think you should see this: This was one of my favourtie movies of 2009 I just loved the revamped take on Star Trek as I felt the series needed a little life breathed into it. Chris Pine was much better than I expected as Kirk and Zach Quinto was pretty great as Spock though he was kind of overshadowed by Leonard Nimoy while Eric Bana was awesome as Nero. I am really looking forward to the sequel next year. Check this one out it’s awesome.
