Lethal Weapon (1987)

Director: Richard Donner

Cast: Mel Gibson, Danny Glover, Gary Busey, Mitch Ryan

Synopsis: Sgt. Roger Murtaugh (Danny Glover), has just turned 50 and if feeling like he is getting too old for his job. Sgt. Martin Riggs (Mel Gibson), is a cop on the edge that has just lost his wife making him a liability. When the two are partnered together after a young woman commits suicide and it turns out her father is an friend of Roger’s. After digging deeper into his old friend’s past he finds connections to General McAllister (Mitch Ryan), who has been running a heroine smuggling ring ever since the Vietnam War. When his associate Mr. Joshua kidnaps Murtaugh’s daughter both Riggs and Murtaugh must settle their differences in order to save Roger’s daughter.

Trivia: On E! True Hollywood Story, Gary Busey says he was hired to play Joshua because they were looking for someone big and menacing enough to be a believable foe for Mel Gibson. Busey also credits the film for reviving his failing movie career. Jackie Swanson did perform the high fall on her own. Trained by legendary stuntman Dar Robinson. Also, the stunt was done using an airbag covered with a life-size painting of the driveway and cars, which, like a foreground miniature, visually blends into the real scene. Thus, the editor is able to hold the shot until just as she makes contact with the airbag, for greater realism.

Why I think you should see this: This is one of my favourite action films ever and also my favourite Mel Gibson film. Richard Donner does a great job mixing the action and comedy for this movie and he is able to continure it throughout the entire series. Danny Glover and Mel Gibson are amazing in their signature roles and Gary Busey makes for a great enemy. Just a great action movie definitely recommend seeing it sometime.

  1. I love this movie. This was Mel Gibson at the height of his career. Thanks for stopping by my blog.
